Sonoma State University Department of Music

Why take lessons?

The Department of Music at Sonoma State University is a place where students can thrive in a dynamic and creative atmosphere. We emphasize high-quality performance experiences and applied practical training. Each student's educational goals are guided by our knowledgeable and supportive faculty.

Our program prepares students for professional careers as performers, K–12 music educators, studio teachers, and composers. We offer a multitude of performing ensembles, both large and small, in instrumental, choral, jazz, chamber, opera, and musical theatre. Our students have opportunities to perform in the Green Music Center's world-class venues, Weill Hall and Schroeder Recital Hall, and engage with the steady stream of professional guest artists who appear here.

The department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers Bachelor of Music degrees in Performance, Music Education (Pre-Certification), Jazz Studies and Composition; and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Liberal Arts.

Our studio members are active performers and teachers in the community, and have performed with groups such as the Sonoma County Philharmonic, Napa Valley Festival Orchestra, and community bands throughout California. Graduates from our program have become highly successful teachers throughout Sonoma County and beyond!

Collaborations

Recent collaborations with guest artists include the US Navy Band "Pershing's Own," TC4 Saxophone Quartet, among others, and world premiere performances with composers Oscar Navarro, Shuying Li, and more!
